2009 Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival
Commemorative Wine |
| |
| We’re celebrating seven successful
years of specialty wine collaboration with Duplin Winery.
This year’s offering is “Stone Bay Blush.”
Stone Bay, a scenic area of the New River
is of great importance not only in the history of Onslow
County but to the US Marines and Camp Lejeune.
It was originally called “Stone’s
Bay” after Onslow County’s first land surveyor,
Captain William Stone, a significant landholder who owned
property in the area before 1772.
In 1891 the New River Oyster Company developed
the bay into a successful oyster gardening operation. The
company flourished until the beds were buried under mud
after a devastating hurricane, forcing the operation to
close.
Camp Lejeune, across the river from Sneads
Ferry first became interested in the area in the early 1940’s,
looking for a permanent home for its Weapons Training Battalion.
Stone Bay continues to expand in military importance with
the recent addition of a special operations command: MARSOC.
“Stone Bay Blush” honors all
Sneads Ferry residents, our local watermen and the US Marines.

it at every opportunity. That’s why the must-have

We are proud to present our FIFTH FESTIVAL
WINE (Semi-Sweet White Table Wine): "WILD CAUGHT
WHITE". Life in Sneads Ferry may not be wild,
but the shellfish and finned fish that come from our little
fishing village are – wild caught! Until meeting its
demise by commercial net, crab pot, hook and line or via a
skillfully thrown cast net, our seafood was swimming wild
and free in our coastal waters, not penned up in ponds. The
proof is in the tasting, so cook up a mess of our shrimp,
pour a glass of our festival wine and go WILD!

We are proud to present our FOURTH FESTIVAL
WINE (Sweet Red Table Wine): "NEW RIVER RED".
Civilizations and cultures have flourished along the New River
for thousands of years. This river, one of the oldest in the
country, begins and ends in Onslow County. Central to life
in Sneads Ferry, its abundance and variety of seafood provides
income for our local watermen, and great eating for everyone.
The New River Inlet, with its ever-shifting sands and furious
currents challenges boaters on their way to and from the Atlantic
Ocean. We in Sneads Ferry are grateful for the scenic but
fragile beauty of this river, and we remain committed to its
care. We honor all it offers with our 4th commemorative wine. |
